As black history month approaches we remember all those who came before us to make change in America. People such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks. But black history goes beyond those names from the past and stands before us here in the present. Names like Oprah Winfrey, Brock & Michelle Obama, and Anita Hall are all doing their part to shape history for future generations to come by fighting for black equality today.

Oprah Winfrey came from poverty and has worked her way up to the successful leader she is today. From her production accolades, to her acting and talk show hosting; Oprah is a name that almost everyone knows. She is known in history as the first black woman to own and produce her own talk show. Although Oprah herself would have you look to others for their astounding work towards equality and their activism in the black rights movement; she herself, is quite impressive.

Another well-known name today that shapes the history books for tomorrow is Brock Obama. Obama was the first black president. As you can imagine this was a glorious step toward making tomorrow a fairer and freer place time to live. His work as the president and as a leader in the community has shaped dozens of young lives. These achievements have gone down in history.

Alongside her husband, Michelle Obama has some great feats of her own. As the first black woman to serve as the first lady, Michelle Obama is an amazing role model and leader. She is a lawyer, writer and public figure. She has become the face of many issues and the struggle that it takes to overcome obstacles and fight for what is right.

As we move through current events and make our way through historical stepping stones, we discuss Anita Hall. She is not only a name for black rights that will go down in history, but she is a women’s rights advocate. She has a background in education and is an acclaimed author. She has inspired other works of literature and will certainly be a name that goes down in history.

Of course, this month we want to be sure that we pay tribute to all those American heroes who paved the way for current issues and debates of black rights. Those who came before, have been written in the history books, and have led the world to great change. Those are the black Americans that are truly celebrated this month. Please take a moment and remember these amazing individuals, not only for the names you know from your own history lessons in school; but for the millions of lives these people have changed.
